Bridgeport, CT — August 6, 2026
Steelpointe Harbor marked a milestone in Bridgeport’s waterfront transformation on Thursday, August 6, with a Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting for The August, the first residential phase of the harbor’s master-planned community.
Community leaders, project partners, and guests gathered in the main lobby for the afternoon ceremony, which opened with remarks from Master of Ceremonies Frank Borres and a welcome from Mayor Joseph P. Ganim of Bridgeport. Governor Ned Lamont also addressed the crowd, joining the mayor in recognizing The August as a major step forward for Connecticut’s largest city. A video presentation, “Voices of Bridgeport at The August,” rounded out the program before the ceremonial ribbon was cut.
“Here we are today, where we are celebrating a major milestone. Where people can be here and enjoy the waterfront that’s been cut off to them for over 100 years.” – Bobby Christoph Jr.
A New Waterfront Community
The August is a state-of-the-art, 420-unit waterfront community and the first residential phase of Steelpointe Harbor, one of the most significant redevelopment projects in Bridgeport’s history. Its 420 new homes include 160 workforce apartments, exceeding the development team’s workforce-housing commitment for the project’s initial phase.
The project’s impact reaches well beyond the buildings themselves. Construction generated more than 453,900 labor hours and awarded over $41.8 million in contracts to minority-, women-, and small-business enterprises, surpassing the project’s diversity contracting requirements. The development also supported local hiring, apprenticeship opportunities, and employment for members of the re-entry community.
Part of a Bigger Vision
The August is one piece of a much larger plan. The Steelpointe Harbor master plan calls for approximately 1,500 residences alongside restaurants, retail, a commercial marina, hospitality, public amenities, and other waterfront uses.
Set on a peninsula between the Yellow Mill Channel and the Pequonnock River, with Long Island Sound to the south, The August offers an ideal location — roughly an hour from New York City via I-95 or Metro-North, and about an hour from Port Jefferson, Long Island via ferry. It’s designed as a walkable, mixed-use community near Bridgeport’s commuter rail station, sports arena, and amphitheater.
The site also honors Bridgeport’s maritime and industrial roots. Shipbuilding began along this waterfront in the early 1700s, and by the late 1800s the peninsula had become a center of commerce. The name “Steel Point” traces back to the Bridgeport Steel Works that once operated there. After decades of preparation by the City of Bridgeport, the former industrial waterfront is being reborn as a new engine of housing, jobs, commerce, and public activity.
