The first store to serve customers at the long-delayed development is Starbucks, which had a low-key first day on Friday. There were no ribbon cuttings or celebrity visitors, but at least a few satisfied customers sitting outside on a mild early-autumn day.

There was no advance announcement of the store’s opening. Mayor Bill Finch’s administration, which is known for celebrating every advance in city development no matter how trivial it might seem, declined to trumpet a legitimate milestone Friday, leaving it to word of mouth for people to learn of the first functioning retail business at the waterfront site in decades.
